STUDENT & EDUCATION PROJECTS
Student projects. From screen to something real.
3D printing and practical project support for students, colleges and universities in Durban and across KZN. From final-year engineering prototypes and architecture models to robotics enclosures, product design models and teaching aids, PRIMUS 3D helps turn your files, drawings or concept into physical parts.
Built around the application. Not just the printer.
PRIMUS 3D combines design thinking, material selection, additive manufacturing and finishing. The result is a considered part or product made for its intended purpose—not an unfinished print that still needs to be resolved.
01
Engineering, robotics and final-year prototypes
Manufacture the physical parts for a mechanism, electronics enclosure, sensor mount, test rig or proof of concept. We assess fit, clearances, material and assembly requirements against your brief. If your project already has working electronics or bought-in components, include their dimensions so the printed parts can be developed around them.
Mechanical and mechatronics prototype components
Robotics housings, mounts and brackets
Electronics enclosures, LCD and button cut-outs
02
Architecture, interior and product design models
Create a physical presentation model from your design. The overall scale, base dimensions and smallest features determine which details can be reproduced clearly. We can assess buildings, site elements, structural study pieces and product appearance models, with print-only or finishing work defined in the quotation.
Architectural scale models and presentation pieces
Product and industrial design prototypes
Interior design objects and display models
03
Lecturers, colleges and university departments
We welcome enquiries for demonstration models, teaching aids, repeat components and department-led prototype work. Share the learning or research use, quantity, dimensions, expected handling and required date. Formal quotation details, billing instructions and any purchasing requirements can be reviewed before an order is accepted.
Classroom demonstration and STEM models
Small batches for practical teaching activities
Research fixtures and prototype components
04
Plan the budget and submission date
Send your required date early and distinguish the first fitment check from the final presentation deadline. A simple test part can help identify changes before a full build. Geometry, material, quantity and finishing all affect the quote; we can assess adjustments to the scope around your budget. Timing is confirmed after the files and workload are reviewed.
Print-only, prototype and finishing scopes
Material, detail and quantity options
Time allowed for fitting and revisions
05
A useful file and quotation checklist
Include the intended use, dimensions in millimetres, quantity and the parts that need to fit together. STL and 3MF files help us assess printable geometry; STEP or other CAD references can be reviewed for preparation. If you only have a sketch or sample, describe what needs to be developed. You lead the academic project and we support the agreed design and manufacturing work.
State dimensions, units and scale
Identify mating components and critical clearances
Include reference files and your required date

KZN collection, delivery and confidential ideas
Our workshop is in Durban. We assess collection or delivery for students and institutions across Durban, Umhlanga, Phoenix, Ballito, Pinetown, Westville, Hillcrest, Umlazi, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay and wider KwaZulu-Natal. For a confidential research concept or student venture, we arrange and sign an NDA before sensitive information is shared.

Frequently asked
Before we begin.
Do you work with individual students as well as institutions?+
Yes. Individual students, project teams, lecturers, colleges, university departments and research groups can request an assessment and quotation. The manufacturing scope and order arrangements are agreed for each project.
Can you help if I only have a sketch or an idea?+
Yes, we can assess the design and preparation needed. Send a clear non-confidential overview, intended use and approximate size. If the idea is confidential, arrange an NDA before sharing sensitive information.
Can you work to my student project budget?+
Share your target budget and the details that matter most. We can assess practical changes to size, construction, material or finishing, then quote the agreed scope. A price is confirmed after the actual requirements are reviewed.
Can you meet an urgent submission deadline?+
Tell us the required date immediately. Availability depends on the design readiness, size, material, finishing and current workload. We confirm feasibility and the completion date after assessment; allow time for fitting and possible revisions.
Can you make architecture models and robotics parts?+
Yes, suitable architectural models, product appearance models, enclosures, mounts and mechanical prototype components can be assessed. Include the scale or dimensions and any components the parts must fit.
Can a lecturer or department request a formal quotation?+
Yes. Send the institution or department details, project brief, quantities, required date and quotation or purchasing instructions. Any required supplier documentation and payment arrangements are reviewed before the order is accepted.
Are you an official university or college service?+
PRIMUS 3D is an independent design and manufacturing business. We welcome enquiries from students and institutions; any formal institutional arrangement is agreed separately.
Can I collect my parts in Durban?+
Collection from our Durban workshop can be arranged. Delivery or courier options for suitable parts are agreed with the quotation, including packaging and the destination.
Start with what you have
A sketch, sample or idea is enough to begin.
Send us your requirements, measurements, reference photos, drawings or 3D files. We will help define the most practical route forward.
Send the project type, dimensions, quantity and required date. If you have a budget, include it so we can assess a suitable material, detail level and finishing scope.
Share your brief, drawings or available 3D files.
Agree the work, price and realistic completion date.
Manufacture, assess the part and plan any further iteration.
For departmental enquiries, include quotation and billing requirements when we discuss the scope.
Confidential research or a new invention? Arrange an NDA first ↗ before sending sensitive information.
